The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the following vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions and committees. Council will act on these vacancies at the December 13, 2011, City Council meeting. All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record Form and return it to the City Clerk’s Office or file the form electronically via the City’s website no later than 5:00 p.m. on November 25, 2011.
Below is the list of vacancies for which residents of Brookville-Seminary Valley might be eligible. If you see one that interests you, please also read the fine print at the bottom of this posting before applying.
Alexandria Gang Task Force – one vacancy for a member from and representing the youth of the City, due to a resignation. Meets quarterly during the weekday evening. Time commitment: Approximately two hours per meeting.
Alexandria-Gyumri [Armenia] Sister City Committee – six vacancies for citizen members, five due to resignations and one due to an expiring term. Meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Time commitment: approximately three hours per month.
Beautification Commission – two vacancies for citizen members due to resignations. Meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Time commitment: approximately eight hours per month.
Citizen Corps Council – vacancies include one for a representative of an Alexandria civic association, due to a resignation; and one for a representative of the Alexandria business community, due to an expired term. [For the latter, an application should be coordinated with the West End Business Association.] Meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Time commitment: approximately four hours per month. Commission for the Arts – one vacancy for a citizen member who represents the public-at-large as an arts consumer and participant, due to an expired term. Meets the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Time commitment: approximately twelve hours per month.
Commission on Employment – four vacancies: two business representatives from among recognized area businesses, including minority owned and small businesses due to resignations; and two citizen members, one due to a resignation and one due to an expired term. Meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 8:00 a.m. Time commitment: approximately five hours per month.
Commission on HIV/AIDS – nine vacancies, including one high school student who currently attends any high school located in the City due to an administration action (ordinance change); three citizens-at-large due to a resignations; and one member who is a practicing physician due to a resignation. Meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Time commitment: approximately three hours per month.
Commission on Persons with Disabilities – four vacancies, including one citizen member due to a resignation; and two disabled citizen members due to resignations. Meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month. Time commitment: approximately six to ten hours a month.
Community Policy and Management Team – one vacancy for a parent representative who is not an employee of any public or private program which receives funds from the Comprehensive Services Act due to a resignation. Meets on the third Wednesday of the month from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Time commitment: approximately two hours per month.
Community Services Board – one vacancy for a licensed physician representative due to a resignation. Meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Time commitment: approximately eight hours per month.
Fort Ward Ad Hoc Advisory Group - (appointments will be made by the City Manager) One vacancy as follows: one at-large citizen member who has shown a knowledge and keen interest in Fort Ward. Meets on an as-needed basis and is limited to a two-year period. Time commitment: approximately three hours per month.
George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – seven vacancies: one business representative nominated by the Chamber of Commerce, due to an expired term; one citizen member due to a resignation; one member nominated by a veterans organization other than the Veterans of Foreign Wars or the American Legion, due to a resignation; one member nominated by the Veterans of Foreign Wars due to a resignation; one member nominated by the Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations due to a resignation; one member nominated by the Masonic Fraternity and one member who attends high school in the City of Alexandria, due to a resignation. Meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Time commitment: approximately three to five hours per month. Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – six vacancies, including one citizen representative from Planning District III due to an expired term, and one citizen representative from Planning District III due to a resignation. [Planning District III is the West End.] Meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., but not during the summer. Time commitment: approximately two hours per month.
Historical Restoration and Preservation Commission – one vacancy for a citizen member due to a resignation. Meets at the call of the chairperson.
Local Emergency Planning Committee – one vacancy for a representative from a community group due to an expired term. Meets quarterly at the call of the chair. Time commitment: approximately two hours per meeting.
Public Health Advisory Commission – four vacancies, including one physician practicing in the City nominated by the Alexandria Medical Society due to a resignation; and two citizens who are non-health professionals, due to expiring terms. Meetings on the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. . Time commitment: approximately four hours per month.
Sister Cities Committee – four vacancies, including two citizen members, one due to a resignation and one due to an expiring term. Meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. and participates in the Christmas Walk and Scottish games.
Social Services Advisory Board – two vacancies for citizen members, one due to an expired term and one due to an expiring term. Meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Time commitment: approximately six hours per month.
USS Alexandria Liaison Committee – one vacancy for a representative of the U.S. Navy League due to an expired term.

The term “expiring term” means the position vacancy is due to a term of an incumbent that is about to expire. The incumbent may or may not reapply for the position.
All applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2641, which states that City employees may not apply for vacancies on boards, committee or commissions that relate to the responsibilities of the department in which they are employed.
Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time.
